If we are intersted in deep "formalization of the world" we should look at systems like Cyc, which covers most of concerns described in this post. But we pay the price in this case, because it takes much more time to create "deep models". Not ready for Cyc? We can use Common Logic as a "simplified" modeling formalizm. If we want to restrict our models by constraints from Description logic then RDF/OWL can help. Topic maps are quite intersting in a sense that they can nicely transfer factual information between "more intelligent" systems. It is perfect also as a lightweight mechanism for creating domain models which can be refactored into deeper models later.

I started writing a comment on this, but after it passed two pages I decided to turn it into a blog entry, which you can find here: http://www.garshol.priv.no/blog/173.html

@karl,

yes, I think I will. Eventually, but I am afraid not soon. But in the meantime, you might consult Wikipedia's article on the Russian linguist Roman Jakobson, which gives a general summary of his views on the different functions of language. I have found it a useful way to think about a variety of problems in information preservation and dissemination.

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong,
And I am Marie of Roumania.
